About Ohio Concrete

Ohio Concrete Sawing and Drilling began operating in 1981.  Skip Aston founded the business after leaving a job with another concrete cutting company. Money was tight in the early 80’s as a recession swept the country.  When a job came up where the company did not own the equipment, Skip and his staff would go buy it.  The staff at Ohio Concrete Sawing and Drilling just needed an extra day or two to acquire the larger core bit or large blade.

In the early 80’s Ohio Concrete Sawing and Drilling employees were working at the Toledo Art Museum for Lathrop Construction.  They were core drilling holes for a new canopy over a new entrance at the back of the building.  This entrance is currently the most used entrance at the rear of the building adjacent to the parking lot.  The superintendent was looking for a grouting contractor to grout the new I-beams in place supporting the new canopy.  Skip overheard the superintendant saying the grouting contractors out of Detroit wanted $2,000 a day to grout these beams in place.   The superintendant told Skip that Lathrop had a freeze on spending due to the recession.

Skip ended up purchasing the grouting equipment after a quick weekend trip to Chemgrout in Chicago.  The principal of Chemgrout came in over the weekend, provided a few minutes of instruction on operating the grouting machine for this specific application.  The following Monday, Ohio Concrete was grouting the beams in place for the new canopy.  Thirty years later, they are still in place supporting the canopy.  This story exemplifies the can-do attitude the company had then and still has today where they have always been willing to try new things in an effort to provide value to customers.

In recent years, Ohio Concrete has added many services in an effort to meet their customer’s needs.  Ohio Concrete financed the start up of Ground Penetrating Radar Services, which has expanded into 20 cities across the country and is a totally separate entity operated by one of Skip’s sons.  They have also added wire sawing capabilities, concrete grinding and polishing, offices throughout the state of Ohio, one in Michigan and an office in Florida.

Times have changed and the recession of the last couple years have stymied the growth on this company after 25 years of consistent growth.  The attitudes have not changed and Ohio Concrete Sawing and Drilling remain committed to meet their customer’s needs at a fair price.
