HEIGHT OF DAM WALL REDUCED
Ohio Concrete Sawing and Drilling, Inc. - Toledo Division was contracted by Genesis Contracting, Inc. of Holland, Ohio to reduce the height of a dam wall that spans a branch of the Auglaize River in Fort Jennings, Ohio.
The dam wall needed to be reduced in height to remove a safety hazard and to facilitate fish migration. Our task was to horizontally cut a 14" thick x 110' long dam wall. In doing so, we were to reduce the height of the dam by 18". Genesis Contracting then removed the cut sections with a "grabber" attachment to their machinery.
In reducing the height of the dam, it was critical that we begin the work when the height of the river water was low, thus protecting the heavy machinery needed to remove the cut pieces of the wall and our hydraulic cutting equipment. The weather was also a consideration as we had to be working in temperatures of mid 30's and above since our cutting blades required water in the cutting process.
Once the 18" height of the dam was removed, we were also required to cut two notches each 6" deeper in the wall and 10' long positioned near the center of the wall.
The white rock that was placed into the river to allow the heavy machinery to be stable did not result in hindering the fish migration.
Matthew Roller of Genesis Contracting, Inc. was very pleased with the work we had done.
