Rail Pocket Trenches

Ohio Concrete Sawing & Drilling, Inc. was called upon to cut two trenches 60' long x 12" wide x 2" deep to create rail pockets in a concrete slab on grade.

The rail pockets were created by first cutting the perimeter of the trenches making sure the corners were not overcut. The next step involved ribbon cutting of the concrete to be removed to a depth of not quite 2" deep. The ribbon cut concrete was then chipped out of the trench and removed. A scarifier was used to shave the concrete down as close to the 2" depth as possible before a hand grinder smoothed and finished the bottom side of the trench to the required 2" depth. Because of the preciseness of the work, no leveling material was needed. A dustless Hepa vacuum took care of the dust issue throughout this entire process.

The rail pockets allowed the installed rails to be flush with the concrete slab to allow equipment to be driven over the rails for mobility. The effect is not unlike a typical roadway railroad crossing. The installation of rail pockets also removed the danger of the rails becoming a trip hazard if they were to protrude above the concrete slab.

Two other pockets measuring 1'9" x 2'2" x 2" deep were cut into the concrete for the installation of other equipment and were created in a similar fashion.
