Vacuum Excavation and Potholing

Avoid utility strikes.

One of the dangers with underground excavation is the possibility for a utility strike. With the use of a vacuum excavator, utilities can be located safely without fear of damage or disruption. This process uses a pressurized water jet to loosen the earth and a heavy industrial vacuum to remove the material. Excavation can also be completed underneath asphalt or concrete slabs. This process used in conjunction with ground penetrating radar can ensure a safe working site.

Other Uses of Vacuum Excavation:

  • Clean out valve boxes or transition sumps
  • Building Area wells
  • Cooling Tower sumps

Vacuum Excavator Replaces Drill Bit

The augering of holes with an auger bit attached to a drill is the more common method of creating postholes. This process was not possible in this application because of the existence of geogrid or metal mesh approximately 24" below the ground surface. An augering bit would become entangled in the mesh either getting the bit "stuck", damaging the equipment, or both. To avoid augering problems, it was decided that Vacuum Excavation was the best method to accomplish the job. With Vacuum Excavation, soil can be removed and collected at the same time in a controlled environment. In addition, if there exists the possibility of buried utilities in the jobsite area, these utilities would not be cut or damaged as is often possible with powerful augers or excavating equipment.
