Concrete Floor Grinding, Shaving & Milling
Flatten your slab and clean it up in one easy step.
Our Professional Concrete Grinding Solutions
Diamond tools are an ideal way to smooth out bumps and trip-hazards in concrete floors. It is not unusual for adjacent floor slabs to have slightly different elevations, but grinding concrete with diamonds is the least expensive way to eliminate these problem areas.
Ohio Concrete’s grinder and compact concrete shaver grinding tools can help correct concrete problems without completely removing the old concrete and installing new.
Concrete grinding is often used to fix the following:
- Uneven joints creating possible trip hazard
- Spalled areas and deteriorating surfaces
- Old paint, coatings, adhesives, and mastics that need removed
- Uneven floor level making tile and flooring difficult or impossible to install
- Poor concrete installation
- Surface is too rough for bare feet
We will work closely with contractors to level the floor and make it the desired subfloor. While this process requires multiple passes and multiple checks by our customer, it is far less expensive and less intrusive than complete slab replacement.
The tools are fume-free and dry for indoor or outdoor applications, and they utilize an industrial mobile vacuum system, thereby leaving a clean dry surface. The dry waste is removed from your location and properly disposed of. Multiple surface finishes are also available for your application.
Beneficial outcomes:
- Chemical free process
- Increased traction
- Production time is greater than shot blasting and scarifying
- Renewed surface opened to receive new coating or flooring
- Eliminate trip and fall hazards
- Reduced Prep time for flooring installation
- Cleaned Surface

Concrete Floor Grinding / Shaving / Milling – FAQs
When is floor grinding required before installing new flooring?
Floor grinding is typically required when slabs are uneven, have surface contaminants, or need to meet flatness or height tolerances. It is commonly used before installing epoxy coatings, polished concrete, or new flooring systems to ensure proper bonding and performance.
Can grinding remove old coatings and adhesives?
Yes. Grinding is frequently used to remove old epoxy, glue, paint, and other surface coatings. Proper removal is critical to prevent bonding failures in new flooring systems. The grinding method is selected based on coating thickness and slab condition.
How much material can be removed during grinding or milling?
Material removal depends on the equipment and application. Light grinding removes surface imperfections, while shaving or milling can remove more substantial high spots or uneven areas. The approach is tailored to achieve the required surface profile without compromising slab integrity.
Can floor grinding correct trip hazards or uneven joints?
Yes. Grinding and shaving are commonly used to eliminate trip hazards caused by slab displacement, curled joints, or uneven transitions. The goal is to restore safe, smooth travel paths while minimizing material removal.
Can grinding be done in occupied facilities?
Yes. Dust-controlled equipment allows grinding and shaving to be performed in active warehouses, factories, and commercial buildings. Work can be phased or scheduled to minimize disruption to operations.
